(Garden) birds in March.

March is a real transition month as far as birds are concerned. While many winter guests are still in our country, the first summer guests are already arriving. Typical winter visitors that you can still see in March are, for example, the keep and the redpoll, but many robins are also winter visitors. On the other hand, species such as the chiffchaff and reed warbler arrive in our country in March to start singing almost immediately. And then of course you have the hibernators who suddenly make themselves heard again in March.
Finch:
This can be seen all year round in our country and is one of the most common birds in parks and forests. The male has a wine-red breast and blue-grey head. In winter, finches and swarms fly around. In the spring they suddenly live ‘on their own’ again.
Chiffchaff:
He is a summer visitor who suddenly arrives in March. It resembles the willow warbler, but listen to the song: the chiffchaff sings its own name. In March you can see the chiffchaffs flying fanatically after each other. Sometimes they pluck an insect from the sky. You usually see chiffchaffs in the bushes, but also in the reeds.
Wren:
These can be seen all year round in our country. They are small but nice and with a very loud vocals. You don’t understand that such a loud sound can escape from such a small bird. The wren benefits from mild winters. Then they will survive. However, harsh winters are disastrous. These small birds lose relatively much and quickly heat. So they have to eat continuously to have enough energy to keep warm.
Goldfinch or goldfinch
It can be seen all year round in our country. They can often be seen in our Aanschotse Beemden. Usually flies in swarms, along with goldfinches or other finches. With their specific flight method, hopping up and down a bit in the air, they can be recognized.
Blackbird
They can also be seen in our country all year round and are one of the most common garden birds in our country. The man starts singing early in the year and also early in the morning. He can really keep you awake. The song of the blackbird is calm and melancholy.
Long-tailed tit:
Can also be seen all year round in our country. For the long-tailed tit: more tail than body. However, the long-tailed tit is not actually a tit. It is not related to the blue tit or great tit, with which it travels in the winter. It’s a separate species. From March, the long-tailed tits leave the swarm and the pairs build their nests.
