Cleaned 55 bird nest boxes in our neighborhood
By members of the Play, Green and Environment working group and other members of the neighborhood associationIn recent weeks, all 55 nesting boxes hanging in the trees in Blixembosch have been cleaned and cleanedhung back. The first nesting boxes have been there for 4 years., 2 years ago, students from group 3 of the Vuurvlinderschool got the nesting boxes cleaned up. Sometimes dead, newly born birds were found in the cupboards, but not nowis certainly a pleasant experience for young children. Furthermore, there were vermin in some blocks. It has therefore been decided to open the nest blocks this autumn with members of the quality of life teamtrees and clean them immediately. After applying fresh nesting materials (hairfrom a dog grooming salon), the nesting boxes were immediately put back in place.
Nest boxes appeared to have disappeared without a trace at 3 locations…
This week we received news that the municipality was making 20 more nest boxes available for our neighborhood.These new nest boxes are hung in the beautiful trees to the left and right of the cycle pathFairytale forest to Blixembosch Outside.
By the way, we found an illegal resident in a nest block along this cycle path. A wasp or European hornet had used the nest block as its nest.. (see photo). According to our local resident and passionate beekeeper Wil Brans, the nest box could simply be cleaned and hung back…
