Adopt a Street!

Green and greening is of paramount importance to the municipality of Eindhoven. And keeping streets and neighborhoods clean is just as important. Participate in this yourself via Adopt a Street: an Eindhoven volunteer initiative that originated in 2014 and in which more than 1000 residents from different neighborhoods throughout Eindhoven participate. When you “adopt” you help keep the area you have adopted clean and/or green.
If you sign up for ‘Adopt a Street’, you help to keep your own street clean, beautiful and/or green. This can be (part of) a street, but also a square or (part of) a green strip or park.
Adopt a Street activities can be divided into two categories: clean and green.
Clean
You help to keep your living environment clean by cleaning up litter. For this you can get a waste grabber, gloves, waste bags and a safety vest at Adopt a Street. Adopt a Street also regularly lends materials to, for example, primary schools or companies for clean-up campaigns. Schools can also find free teaching materials and plenty of inspiration for lessons for primary and secondary education on the Supporter van schoon site via their educational website Getting started with waste.
Because the younger children get started with the themes of litter and recycling, the better.
Green
To keep your living environment green and colorful, you can ‘adopt’ a piece of the public space and make it greener or let it bloom. These can be, for example, tree mirrors or facade gardens. You can always adopt tree mirrors and facade gardens, no further permission is required for this. If you want to adopt something else in the public space, for example part of a park, you have to coordinate this with the municipality. For this you can make a report on the BuitenBeter app. Add a clear photo of the area to be adopted, choose the category “Other” and indicate in the description what exactly you would like to do. You will then receive a response and possible approval from the municipality.
If you have adopted a piece, it is up to you to maintain it. Think of planting plants and flowers, weeding and watering. You can apply for mulch to improve the soil. This is organic material that is good for the plants and the soil. Adopted areas must be marked with an Adopt a Street sign. This way the municipality and also the sweeping and cleaning teams know that you take care of the maintenance and they do not hoe your green area empty.
All help is welcome and small contributions are also very much appreciated! Normal maintenance in public areas, such as mowing the lawn, pruning and emptying waste bins, of course, remains the responsibility of the municipality.
During the year there are sometimes promotions from the municipality where you can get perennials and potting soil or mulch material. In the autumn there is sometimes a flower bulb promotion.
We will keep you informed via the Blixemflitsen of any ‘growth and bloom’ actions from the municipality.
