It happens in Blixems!

Interview AMeezingkoor Blixembosch – Anita Wijman

What does the sing-along choir do?

  • It’s more of a social club than a choir. It’s really like singing along with the music and text played on a large screen.

What do you need to be able to do to become a member?

  • Enthusiasm is the most important thing, we do not do auditions or voice tests in advance. Everyone can participate. We don’t have a conductor who tells you what to do. It’s all about having fun singing together.

What happens if you sing out of tune or out of time?

  • That certainly happens sometimes. We all accept that, no problem.

What music does the choir sing?

  • A very varied repertoire of pop music. Often English-language pop music from the sixties, seventies and eighties. But also contemporary music.

Is there any form of guidance?

  • Someone organizes the music. Another keeps track of the finances. And I coordinate the well-being of the club.

How are the songs chosen?

  • Very democratic. Anyone can submit songs. The members vote and if more than three-quarters approve, the song is added to the repertoire

What is the average age of the choir?

  • Average age is around 60 years.

What is the distribution between men and women?

  • There are fifteen women members and five men. That is why we now have a membership freeze for women. Men are welcome!

When are the singing evenings?

  • These are every Monday evening outside school holidays between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, two blocks of approximately 45 minutes. We chat during the break

Does the choir also want to perform?

  • That’s not ambition. The non-binding character is precisely our strength.

How does the choir maintain a good mood?

  • This happens naturally through enthusiasm, singing pleasure and humor

What do you hope to achieve with the choir in the future, what is your wish for this?

  • Keep the choir as it is now. A few extra men would be nice. This also offers more possibilities in terms of polyphonic singing.
