===Fashion Club Eindhoven===
At the end of 2024, we started as a sewing course for young people between the ages of 13 and 27.
Since then, we’ve been growing—and now everyone is welcome!
We have fabric and sewing machines available to borrow, but it’s always better if people bring their own materials. In this club, there’s a lot of freedom, and everyone works on their own projects.
But we’re still together—so we help each other out.
Just think of something you’d like to sew and start experimenting!
FREE and NO OBLIGATION.
Sometimes we also offer CREATIVE WORKSHOPS.
So far, we’ve made our own jewelry and mixed our own perfumes.
These are organized by small local businesses who teach us their creative skills.
They come with a small fee.
No experience? No problem.
We all have to start somewhere, right?
No ideas? No problem.
Look around—there are books for inspiration, the internet is always helpful, and you’re welcome to try someone else’s idea.
No confidence? No problem.
It’ll be okay. We support each other.
We meet every Wednesday from 18:30 to 20:30 at Jongerencentrum Blixems.
For more info, check out our Instagram: @fashion.club.eindhoven
(Hopefully) sometime in September, after the summer holidays, we’ll be starting an 8-week workshop project, just eight Wednesday evenings.
It’s perfect if you want an introduction to three fun activities: sewing, crochet, and a surprise!

===Interview about the Future of Our Community Center “VTA Blixems”===
In early June, I spoke with the chairman of the neighborhood association, Jacques Borsboom, about the future plans for the VTA Blixems community center. Naturally, we conducted the interview in the community center itself.
What changes are coming to VTA Blixems?
At the end of this year, Lumens will stop managing the VTA Blixems community center. The municipality has asked the neighborhood association to come up with a plan for how the center can be managed by a foundation. A think tank of 15 members is currently working on this plan.
What is the think tank’s main priority?
The first priority is to balance income and expenses. One way to generate more income is by extending opening hours and organizing activities during the day. That could also mean opening during weekends. The next question is: which target groups are interested in weekend activities at the community center, and what kinds of activities suit them? That’s something we haven’t researched yet.
Will volunteers be involved in the community center?
Yes, there will be a role for volunteers alongside paid staff who handle daily operations. Volunteers will be needed to help organize and support events. However, volunteering should remain a secondary task for those involved.
What are the further plans?
Improving the building and securing a budget for that. We expect a financial contribution from the municipality to help cover these improvements and any budget shortfalls. Organizing regular activities will come later. You could think of club meetings like dance nights and darts—activities that could bring in visitors several evenings a week. Our biggest concern is making the overall financial picture work out with the municipality.
When will it be clear what will definitely happen with the management of VTA Blixems?
In September, we’ll decide whether to move forward with the plan, including what financial contribution from the municipality will be required. The decision will depend on whether the board of the new foundation believes it has a real chance of success.

===Look to the Side – So the Sweeper Can Get Through===
A clean and weed-free street is something the municipality can do a lot about—but not everything. You can help too.
Many parked cars make it difficult to sweep the streets properly. That’s why we need your cooperation.
The municipality carries out a full street sweeping of your neighborhood at least twice a year (once in spring and once in autumn), dividing the area into two parts.
One day the even-numbered side of the street is cleaned, and the next day the odd-numbered side.
We kindly ask you not to park your car between 08:00 and 17:00 on the side of the street that is scheduled for sweeping that day.
You’ll know when your part of the neighborhood is scheduled thanks to signs placed at the entrances to your area.
Sweeping Dates:
- Monday, June 30 – Even numbers: Sprookjesbosch and Engelse Wijk
- Tuesday, July 1 – Odd numbers: Sprookjesbosch and Engelse Wijk
- Wednesday, July 2 – Even numbers: Italian, French, and Edelstenen neighborhoods
- Thursday, July 3 – Odd numbers: Italian, French, and Edelstenen neighborhoods
- Wednesday, July 9 – Even numbers: American neighborhood
- Thursday, July 10 – Odd numbers: American neighborhood
Contractors work year-round to keep our neighborhood clean and tidy—not just during these scheduled sweeping rounds!

A big thank you to the volunteers who place the notice signs!

===THE SECRET OF THE GROTE BEEK===
On the estate of De Grote Beek begins the catchment area of the stream called “De Grote Beek.”
In the past, this area was known as Buurtschap Welschap. Over ten years ago, in order to improve water management in the northwest of Eindhoven, a decision was made to restore the stream, which had become little more than a ditch due to past interventions. The stream valley was excavated, and a real, broad stream was brought back. The management of the area now lies in the hands of the Dommel Water Authority (Waterschap De Dommel).
The Grote Beek—after which the GGzE institution is named—has thus returned to the GGzE grounds. The surrounding area, including the newly developed neighborhoods of Vredeoord and Celsius, has also been impacted by the work done on and around the stream.
Did you know that the Grote Beek also flows underground?
It hides beneath the Boschdijk, reappears, then dives under the Huizingalaan, only to resurface once again in Blixembosch. That’s right—at that point, it flows through the familiar walking area known as “De Aanschotse Beemden.”
How did this beautiful area come to exist in its current form?
In 2001, the municipality designated the area as “Multifunctional Green.” This means the goal was to strike a balance between landscape/ecological value and recreational use.
And how is all of that managed? Leave it to the Water Authority!
Where there’s flow, there must be a destination—and that destination is the Dommel River. The stream is controlled by an automatic weir (a type of water control structure) that adjusts itself based on the upstream and downstream water levels.
The weir ensures water is retained on one side to prevent drought, while also releasing water gradually during heavy rainfall (peak storms), allowing temporary water storage.
In extreme situations, both upstream and downstream areas may be intentionally flooded to accommodate excess water.
Technical facts:
- Normal upstream level: 13.85 meters + NAP (Amsterdam Ordnance Datum)
- Normal downstream level: 13.30 meters + NAP
- High water conditions:
- Downstream: up to 14.50 meters + NAP
- Upstream: up to 14.90 meters + NAP
Now we better understand why our feet sometimes get wet in the Aanschotse Beemden—or even why we can paddle through parts of it by canoe, like we did earlier this year!

===VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE ARTWORK FOR THE OUVERTURE SQUARE IN BLIXEMBOSCH===
The wooden wall panel at La Scala on Ouverture Square in Blixembosch is a perfect spot for a mural!
Young people and seniors, together with children from primary school De Boschuil, neighborhood residents from Blixembosch, and professional artists have collaborated to create two designs for a mural on this panel.
Now it’s up to Blixembosch to choose which design will decorate the wall at Ouverture Square!

===Grass Seeds – A Hidden Danger for Dogs and Cats===
A grass seed (or “grass awn”) is a fluffy spikelet that grows at the tip of tall grasses. These spikelets are made up of seeds, each with small, stiff hairs. Because all these hairs point in one direction, they act like barbed hooks.
When your dog walks through tall grass, a piece of the grass seed can break off and stick to their fur. The barbed hairs allow it to move only in one direction—toward the skin. That’s why grass seeds are also known as “creepers.”
In addition to the barbs, these creepers have a sharp tip. Once the tip reaches your pet’s skin, it can pierce through, causing a small wound. Since the seed cannot back out, it continues to burrow deeper into the skin.
This is what makes grass seeds so dangerous for dogs and cats.
===Familiespektakel Group Run 2025===
On Saturday, August 16, running group Blixemsnel is once again organizing a fun group run through the neighborhood as part of the Familiespektakel weekend.
This is not a competition, but a friendly run where you can enjoy beautiful laps in a green environment—together with whomever you like—and a festive finish.
We’ll run laps of about 3.5 km, and you can choose to run 1 to 5 laps, at your own pace.
Your running time will not be recorded—because it’s not a race. Everyone who finishes is a winner!
🕘 Start time: 09:00

===Jong Nederland de Fakkel Thanks All Donors and Buyers===
On Sunday, May 4th, Jong Nederland de Fakkel held a flea market in their building on Fakkellaan in Eindhoven. In the days leading up to May 4th, many people from Woensel came to Fakkellaan to donate items to be sold at the flea market. We want to sincerely thank all these “donors” for their contributions.
Thanks to their generosity, the flea market was a great success. On the day itself, hundreds of visitors came to the market, ensuring the proceeds were very good. We also want to thank all the “buyers” for their financial support.
Jong Nederland will put the money to good use. On Saturday, May 24th, we took the children from our youngest groups to the Billy Bird Hemelrijk amusement park in Volkel, where they had a wonderful day. During the first week of the summer holidays, we will take all members on a week-long summer camp in Asten. That promises to be another fantastic activity.
Jong Nederland de Fakkel has different age groups. If you want to know which group is suitable for your son or daughter, please contact us via email at:
