Grass spikes.
Grass spikes often grow along the paths in the Aanschotse Beemden. But also along sidewalks and road edges. Right there where many dogs sniff. This type of grass is also known as ‘creepers’. They can cause annoying problems for your dog or cat in the period June-September. Grass spikes have barbs that easily get into your animal’s fur, nose, ears and eyes and even penetrate the skin. You can certainly prevent health problems, but then you have to be alert. Grass spikes can sit on the skin or between the toes of an animal, after which the spines pierce the skin and cause inflammation there. The dog responds by scratching or licking the area in question. If you see a spike on the fur or between the toes, try to gently remove it. If barbs remain in the skin, grab them as close to the skin as possible and gently pull them out. If this does not work, let the vet do it.
